President of the Republic of Suriname, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, yesterday met with representatives of the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce (SGCC) at the Pegasus Corporate Center, Georgetown. This meeting focused on enhancing economic collaboration, infrastructure development, and advancing regional ties.

Dr. Vishnu Doerga, Chair of SGCC, expressed profound gratitude for President Santokhi’s unwavering support since the Chamber’s launch on August 31, 2023. Doerga provided updates on SGCC’s progress and highlighted upcoming initiatives, including the International Business Conference (IBC) Suriname 2025. Supported by the Suriname Investment and Trade Agency (SITA), this event will showcase key sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, green energy, and local content while facilitating critical B2B engagements through its innovative networking app.

The release said Santokhi actively contributed to shaping the IBC agenda, stressing the importance of public-private partnerships, skills development, and economic diversification. He underscored the need for strategies beyond oil and gas, focusing on sectors like bauxite, food security, and housing. The release said Santokhi’s Cabinet strong participation in the conference was confirmed, demonstrating Suriname’s commitment to fostering dynamic trade and investment opportunities.

Ambassador of the Republic of Suriname to Guyana, Liselle Blankendal, highlighted the “Suriname Surprise,” the first Suriname Independence celebration in Guyana in 11 years. This event, commemorating 49 years of independence and diplomatic ties, is a joint effort between the Embassy of Suriname and SGCC to strengthen cultural and economic relations.

Infrastructure projects were key to discussions, including funding avenues for the Suriname-Guyana Bridge and the privatisation of the Canawaima Ferry. SGCC proposed managing the ferry system to improve efficiency, expand operations, and enhance cross-border connectivity while awaiting bridge completion. President Santokhi acknowledged these challenges and pledged to review SGCC’s proposals closely.

According to the release the meeting reaffirmed the SGCC’s role in fostering collaboration and driving meaningful initiatives that contribute to the prosperity of Suriname and Guyana.
